We operate a mixed farming operation along the Arm River Valley near Aylesbury, SK. The ranch is adjacent to #11 HWY running north into the valley and south onto abandoned farmland that has been converted to grass.
We raised three children, Amy-Jo, Bert and Matt who are part of the fourth generation of Watkins from our area. Although none of our kids are farming/ranching, they all have direct involvement and help out whenever possible.
Ours is a cow/calf operation and we background some, if not all of our April/May born calves. The cow herd is Hereford/Black Angus based, and we use the best Black Angus bulls we can obtain to service them. We are on a complete herd vaccination program to help prevent treatments and antibiotic use.
Virtually all the feed whether it be roughage, silage, or grain is grown here on the farm. Commercial supplements of salt and mineral are fed as well.
Depending on market conditions we may sell steers straight off the cow, keep them over till spring or even grass them through till August. All of the heifers are backgrounded and sorted for breeding by late June. Culls are sold off the grass in August and the top end are sold as bred heifers on a private basis later in the fall. We have supplied producers across the prairie provinces with quality BWF and Black heifers for many years.
We view the expansion of West Bridgeford Meats and our participation with the Oram’s ventures as a win/win situation. Our ranch has secured a processing outlet for a significant amount of freezer beef being sold to family, friends, and others who recognize this ranch raised beef as being superior in flavor and tenderness because of the way it is fed, handled, and processed. We have been diligent to ensure that none of the beef destined for such use has had any growth hormones and there has been no recent use of antibiotics or parasite control. These rules apply to the beef going into our own freezer and we recognize that our customers appreciate these assurances as well. The freezer beef is taken, almost exclusively from long yearling heifers that come in open or were culled from our replacement heifer groups. They are prime age for slaughter (approximately 18-20 mos.) to yield beef with flavor. They range on grass from May until October and are fed just enough oats and/or barley to allow for adequate marbling and finish prior to slaughter. If you’re interested in purchasing some of our freezer beef give Doris or ourselves a call.
The Pawsitively Bridgeford Pet Food line was also appealing to us because it gave us an outlet for hard to market culls. Pet owners can now supply their pets with feed that is well balanced and more natural in the form of a perfectly healthy beef patty. These patties are affordable and at the same time pet owners can support producers that have little option other than destroying and wasting these cull animals.
